  223.    In the East, there is an ancient tradition, that there was a
  224.    Cup which possessed the strange property of representing in
  225.    it the whole world, and all the things which were then doing.
  226.    The cup is called {Jami Jemsheed,} "the cup of Jemsheed," a
  227.    very ancient king of Persia; and they say that it was
  228.    discovered, filled with the elixir of immortality, when
  229.    digging to lay the foundations of Persepolis.  The Persian
  230.    poets are full of allusions to this cup, which they style
  231.    {Jem jehan nima,} the cup shewing the universe; and to it
  232.    they ascribe all the prosperity of their ancient monarchs.
  233.    Many of the Mahometan princes and governors affect still to
  234.    have information by means of a cup.  Now, though it cannot be
  235.    admitted that Joseph practised divination, yet, according to
  236.    the superstition of those times, supernatural influence might
  237.    be attributed to HIS CUP.
